Tip 'o The Day:

ACADEMY AWARD FASHIONS 2008

We learned as we watched Sunday night in Los Angeles, that the film industry needs time to get their "act together." The stars were a little predictable in their fashion choices for the evening, perhaps because they didn't have as much time or selection due to the writer's strike ending so near to the Awards Show date.

The colors worn most were red and black. The gowns were mostly fitted; either strapless, or with one shoulder. Lots of dangling diamond earrings dazzled, and ropes of jewels appeared around stars necks. (Nicole Kidman had so many diamonds around her neck that her dress was almost forgotten.) Hair was often simple...ponytails, simple chignons, and soft curls were prevalent, perhaps because of the ominous rain clouds that threatened as they arrived on the red carpet.

There were a few departures from the crowd. Keri Russell and Cameron Diaz opted for pastel gowns, and Renee Zellweger looked great in her choice of a classic metallic.

We really liked some looks...our favorite overall was of course super model Heidi Klum. She wore an amazing red gown fit for a princess, her hair pulled up looking quite regal. We also liked Anne Hathaway's choice of a red gown with red roses cascading over her shoulder down the bodice. Her pale skin was stunning set off against the red gown. Amy Adams' look that was classic Hollywood with soft Veronica Lake curls, deep green almost black strapless gown, and soft make up with simple jewelry was stunning.

Remember what you want to copy for your prom night should be right for you. See what you like best from the Academy Awards, and adapt it to your own best style. Be a princess, a Hollywood classic, or whatever look you like. Just remember to keep it simple enough that you can have fun! That is what prom is all about.

There were so many beautiful looks and people, it is impossible to list them all, but there were a few hints that I thought you’d like when you are preparing for prom night:

1. Less is always more. When in doubt, go for the simpler style choice. Whether it is your hair, jewelry, dress, make-up, or shoes, go simple. That way your overall look will be the focus of attention, not some single item that overpowers your outfit.

2. Monochromatic color choices are slimming. Choose dresses that are all one color. It is slenderizing and not too busy. And you will look your best.

3. Hairstyles today are much more casual than before. The days of hairspray and loads of bobby pins are thankfully over. The chignons that were worn on the red carpet were low at the base of the head with small strands allowed free to waft in any slight breeze. The result was soft and flattering.

4. Keep jewelry to a minimum. If you want to wear a single knockout piece of jewelry—earrings that dangle was the choice of most of the stars at the Oscars.

5. Black always looks great. It is chic, slenderizing, and formal, no matter what the style choice. It is hard to go wrong in black this year.

As always, Oscar Night was a fun night for star watching and seeing what the new trends are for this year’s prom season. Use the stars choices as suggestions, and then go out and try lots of dresses, hairstyles, and jewelry, and choose what looks best on you!
